Día de los Muertos at Fiesta de Reyes in Old Town San Diego

I had the chance to experience Día de los Muertos at Fiesta de Reyes in Old Town San Diego, and it was such a beautiful way to kick off this year’s celebration.

Now in its fifth year, the free, family friendly event, La Experiencia, brings the traditions, history, and rich Hispanic culture of Día de los Muertos to life through art, music, food, and meaningful ways to honor and remember loved ones who have passed.

What to do at Dia De Los Muertos, La Experiencia

When you visit Fiesta de Reyes during Día de los Muertos, take your time exploring the plaza and discovering all of the colorful details throughout the experience.

Walk through the displays of Catrinas, decorated skulls, skeletons, marigolds, and traditional altars, and look for the smaller artistic details tucked throughout the space.

    • Explore the Catrinas and skeletons: Walk around the plaza and see how many different designs you can find and admire the artsy details.
    • Visit the Decorated Altars: Take a moment to look at the flowers, photos, candles, and other traditional elements.
    • Take Fun Photos: The colorful displays make fun backdrops for pictures with friends and family.
    • Grab a Bite to Eat: Make an afternoon or evening of it by stopping for food and drinks while you're there. Dine at Casa de Reyes or Barra Barra Saloon for traditional Mexican dishes.
    • Shop all the Cute Shops: Fiesta de Reyes is home to 19 specialty shops, so leave some time to browse! A few favorites to check out include: The Tile Shop, The Olive Oil Emporium and Tienda de Reyes.
    • Don't Skip Dessert:  Grab a fresh churro, ice cream, or other Mexican inspired treats at El Mercadito. Pop in Tierra Dulce, A colorful candy shop with Mexican sweets, raspados, popsicles, Dole Whip and aguas frescas.

    The Ofrenda (altar) Display

One of the most meaningful parts of Día de los Muertos is the ofrenda, a special altar created to honor and remember loved ones who have passed away. Ofrendas are often decorated with photographs, candles, marigold flowers, favorite foods, and personal items that help tell the story of the person being remembered.

Take some time to admire the beautiful details and learn about the traditions behind these colorful displays.

    Enjoy Live Music and Performances

Enjoy traditional Mexican music and colorful folklórico dancing in the plaza, creating a lively atmosphere that makes the celebration feel extra special. It’s a fun way for the whole family to experience the music, culture, and traditions of Día de los Muertos.

The Restaurants at Fiesta De Reyes

When you’re ready for a break from exploring, Fiesta de Reyes has two restaurants right in the plaza:

    • Casa de Reyes: Enjoy traditional Mexican food in a colorful outdoor garden setting, with live entertainment right near the stage. It’s a great family friendly option and makes it easy to enjoy dinner while taking in the festive atmosphere.
    • Barra Barra Saloon: A more casual Old Town spot serving Mexican inspired dishes, seafood, tacos, and margaritas. Kids are welcome here too, making it another easy option for families visiting Fiesta de Reyes.

Tips for Visiting the Día de los Muertos Event

    When to go?

Día de los Muertos – La Experiencia runs from September 1 through November 2, so you have plenty of time to visit.

I recommend going later in the day if you want to see the plaza during daylight and then experience the beautiful lighting after sunset. Fiesta de Reyes also has free live entertainment throughout the week, including mariachi and folklórico dancing.

    How long to spend?

Plan on about 2–3 hours to comfortably walk through the Día de los Muertos displays, take photos, browse the shops, enjoy the entertainment, grab a meal, and stop for dessert. If you want to explore more of Old Town San Diego while you're there, you could easily make it a half-day outing.

    Is it free?

Yes! La Experiencia is free to attend, and there is no charge to enter Old Town San Diego State Historic Park. You can explore the displays and enjoy the atmosphere without purchasing a ticket.

    Is it good for kids?

Absolutely. This is a fun family outing with colorful Catrinas and skeletons, music and dancing, shopping, Mexican candy and treats, and plenty to see as you walk around the plaza.
