San Diego Food Love: Mia Francesca

Mark and I attended a dinner event at Mia Francesca. It was so nice to get out of the house and have a delicious meal together. Mia Francesca is located in the Del Mar Highlands Town Center right by the Cinepolis. The restaurant makes for an awesome date night. We have to go back again soon for a dinner and movie night.

Mia Francesca Del Mar

Background
Mia Francesca came to San Diego from a long line of established restaurants in Chicago. The restaurant features the Italian cuisine of Rome and surrounding areas of Tuscany, Umbria and Lazio. They have a casually sophisticated ambiance mixed with a simple, rustic style of cooking. The menu rotates monthly with dishes appropriate for the season. The offer traditional desserts and have a full bar of crafted cocktails, local beers and select wines varietals that pair well with their dishes.

The Food
We started out with an assortment of bruschettas. My favorite was the Avocado with red onion, tomato, basil, balsamic and evoo. It paired very nicely with the Corsini Birillo Rosso (Italian red) wine.

The Cavoletti di Bruxelles con Pancetta were crispy and delicious. I loved the addition of pancetta and capers mixed in with brussel sprouts.

I am a huge sucker for risotto, especially when mushrooms are involved. The risotto con funghi was fabulous. This is one of my favorite comfort meals and it is cooked perfectly at Mia Francesca.

If these appetizers weren’t enough, we then had the Focaccia al Forno. Amazing. It’s a baked focaccia with crescenza cheese, speck and arugula. I have never had a focaccia like this one before. It looks like a super thin crust pizza. The thin layer of cheese topped with the speck meat is very hearty but lightened with the arugula addition. An exquisite combination.

I hadn’t had pasta for a couple weeks prior to this event. In an attempt to eat healthier I have been limiting my carbs, sugars and dairy. This night was definitely a special treat. The simplicity and perfection of the linguini fagattaro was just what I needed. Beautiful!

We finished up our meal with the Pesce con Tarragon e Funghi. The yellowtail and mushroom dish sat upon a tarragon aioli mixed with oven-dried tomato and topped with shrimp. I loved the presentation.

The blood orange sorbet mixed with vanilla gelato and whipped cream was another delicious treat.

And to finish off the night we sampled the house-made lemoncello with an espresso sugar rim. Perfecto!
