Embargo Grill: Latin Caribbean Cuisine

Have you been to Embargo Grill in Point Loma? I have never even had Latin Caribbean food until last week. I stopped in to try out their specialties and see what all they had to offer. I ended up leaving completely full and happy to have found a fun new spot to eat. Their tasty creations are pretty inexpensive too!

I chatted it up with the manager to see what the favorites of the menu where so I could get a good sampling of what they have to offer. He served up some samples of their meats, sauces, rice and beans so I could figure out which items I liked best. They offer a “create your own dish” where you select your protein, rice or beans and sauce. I would go for the Ropa Vieja (slow roasted beef) with the pink beans, yellow rice and the curry sauce. I also really liked the chimichurri and the garlic aioli sauces. But don’t fret you can taste those too if you order a side of canasta de fritas for $3.95 – a duo of seasoned sweet potato fries with potato fries served with both sauces.

I also tried a sampling of their appetizers. My favorites were the Empanadas Picadillo: deep fried and filled with seasoned picadillo ground beef and Caribbean BBQ sauce, the Croquetas de Jamon y Queso: potato mixed with ham and cheese and fried served with spicy creole sauce and the chicken wings. I wasn’t too big on the Jamaican Jerk sauce served with the chicken wings. The wings are already covered in the Caribbean BBQ and is plenty of sauce for this girl.

For dessert I tried the Caribbean style bread pudding: rum soaked cranberries with a creme anglaise sauce. Very tasty. I also tried their Cafe Con Leche: espresso with steamed milk, a pinch of salt and a dab of butter. This is a must try. It was super delicious and I wanted to drink the whole thing but could only have a sip this time. I’ll have to come back post baby delivery for another try!

The cool thing about Embargo Grill is that it is a super casual stop in or grab to go type of place. It reminded me of the feel of Rubio’s with a Caribbean twist. It would be nice if there were more spots around town like this one.

If you get a chance to try out Embargo Grill let me know what you enjoy best!

I received a meal for media consideration. All opinions are my own.
