I have been lovin' me some tacos lately! Mark and I recently checked out Barrio Star off 5th Avenue in San Diego. It's kind of in between Hillcrest and Banker's Hill. I was immediately attracted to the decor between the sugar skull logo, bright colors and Mexican inspired interior. The best part was the fresh, unique and healthy dishes they served up!
I'm a big fan of cucumbers. I eat them plain, with dips or as a salad all the time. Barrio Star's cucumber appetizer is seasoned with cumin, red chili, lime and cilantro. I love this as an appetizer because it is so simple, healthy and just plain different than other appetizers I've seen. I ordered the pineapple mint agua fresco and it was oh so delicious and refreshing! I probably could have made a meal off of their homemade chips and salsa too.
Since we went on Taco Tuesday, we each ordered a trio of tacos. I tried the soy chorizo, the blackened salmon and my favorite was the special: stuffed fried squash blossom. You really can't go wrong with any of the tacos. Barrio Star also offers soups, salads, bowls and specialties like chili relleno and chicken diablo.
Their decor is just awesome. I have always been a sucker for Mexican inspired decor, vibrant colors and hand written type. The inside center of their lights had different ingredients written in black. I love their style and vibe.
